Description | Brief listing of the Royal Society's exhibits at Burlington House on the occasion of a special event for the Michael Faraday and British Association for the Advancement of Science Centenary celebrations. The displays consisted of archival items and museum objects (listed below) displayed by room, Rooms 1-4, and a complete catalogue of the Royal Society's portraits collection, with hanging location at June 1931.
Room 1 (Reception Room):
The Mace of the Royal Society. Presented by King Charles II in 1663.
Room 2 (Right):
The Charter-Book of the Royal Society containing a transcription of the Charters and the signatures of Founder, Patrons and Fellows from 1662 to the present day; together with facsimile reproductions. The first volume of Council Minutes, Journal Book and Register Book of the Royal Society. Various early lists of Fellows of the Royal Society. An iron chest. Presented by Mr. William Balle, the first Treasurer of the Royal Society in 1663.
Room 3 (Left):
Original letter and drawings;
Malpighi - drawings of anatomy of animals and plants. Volta - letter, 4 April 1800 covering his paper on his electrical discoveries. Petty - sketch and description of his double boat. Wren - MS., of the 'Parentalia'. Galileo - letter dated December 1613.
Room 4 (Principal Library):
First table - papers relating to Michael Faraday.
Volume of diplomas collected and arranged by himself. His certificate of candidature for election into the Society. Note-books of the Glass Committee of which Faraday was Secretary.
Centre table - instruments, manuscripts etc., relating to Sir Isaac Newton.
Original reflecting telescope made by Newton in 1671. The MS., of the Principia and other memorials. Newtoniana - a collection of engravings of Newton and his contemporaries accompanied by short biographies and in some cases autograph letters.
Third table - a collection of instruments.
An early air-pump, probably made by Hauksbee in 1715. Priestley's electrical machine. Model of a double-bottomed boat; Dr. Wollaston's galvanic battery; chronometers used by Captain Cook; barometer used by Charles Darwin etc. A collection of radiometers presented to the Society by Sir William Crookes. The original model for Davy's safety lamp.
