Title | Referee's report by Oliver Joseph Lodge, on a paper 'The measurement of ionic velocities' by Bertram Dillon Steele |
Date | 31 May 1901 |
Description | Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry
Does not find this an interesting or well written paper, it is expressed in a 'slovely manner', and is frequently unclear. Uses the abstract as an example of this. The quasi-historical introduction to the paper is perfunctory and not illuminating. As a record of experimental work the paper is probably worthy of a place in the Proceedings. It is probable that the paper has been referred also to Mr Whetham. If so, his opinion on this aspect of it would be of more value than Lodge's. The paper should be published in the Proceedings in full. The paper is in the 'German foggy style' but the author is 'evidently incompetent' to re-write it in a really readable form. All the illustrations accompanying the paper should be reproduced. Thinks it 'no use asking for improvements'.
