Title | Referee's report by James Alfred Ewing, on a paper 'Experimental researches on drawn steel. - Part I. The influence of changes of temperature on magnetism. Part II. Resistivity, elasticity and density, and the temperature coefficients of resistivity and elasticity' by J R Ashworth |
Date | 8 February 1902 |
Description | Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry
Not recommended for publication in its present form. The author should be invited to describe the substances of his results in a comparatively short paper, which might be published in the Proceedings. Does not mentions modifications. Though there is a great deal of laborious work in the paper, it does not seem to record any sufficient advance in knowledge to warrants its acceptance for the Transactions. So far as the magnetic part is concerned, most of the author's conclusions seem to follow from a study of the effects of temperature on the form of the cyclic curves exhibiting a complete magnetising process. The author does not show that he is acquainted with earlier work in this field, particularly that of Dr D K Morris, 'Philosophical Magazine', 1897.
In part II the author selects what appears to be an exceedingly unsuitable method of measuring Young's modulus, making his results very dependent on the diameter of the wire. At present the paper is rather a collection of laboratory notes, some of them good, but it wants 'digestion' before being published.
