TitleReferee's report by John Edward Lennard-Jones, on a paper 'Calculations of the lower excited electronic energy levels of cyclobutadiene and benzene' by W Moffitt and J Scanlan
Date17 August 1953
DescriptionSectional committee: Chemistry

Paper reference code: A154

Recommended for publication in the Proceedings. Lennard-Jones: 'This paper describes a highly elaborate method of calculating the energy levels of molecules but in the end, when applied to particular examples, it does not yield results which fit in very well with experimental values. It is difficult to say whether this particular method can be improved sufficiently to be reliable. On the whole, in spite of the disappointing numerical applications given in the paper, I think the work should be published as it may prove to be stimulating to others'.
