TitleLetter from Thomas Gold to Dr George C Pimentel, Deputy Director, National Science Foundation, 1800 G Street, N.W., Washington DC
Date6 November 1978
DescriptionGold thanks him for his assurances concerning the lunar sample program. Gold amplifies the nature of his concerns; that after 15 years of development of a clique regime, heavily assisted by NASA who desired to claim scientific successes by the unanimity of the investigators it will be very difficult to break through. Almost all remaining lunar investigators who would be used for peer reviews will come from the in-group. It is only through the setting up of a review committee from outside the presently established lunar community that the system can be broken up. Yet Gold believes it is essential to do this, since the whole subject is demonstrably on the wrong track, and irrefutable, but inconvenient evidence is firmly ignored. The entire program will amount to zero or indeed a negative contribution unless a totally fresh and unbiased view is taken.
