TitleLetter from Thomas Gold to Dr M Adams, Department of Energy, 20 Massachusetts Avenue N.W., Washington DC
Date11 January 1978
DescriptionThanks hiim for the kind words which Mr Cadogan conveyed. Gold will certainly be glad to cooperate in any way he can to get research going on these topics.

Notes that the explosions in the air off New York or Long Island coast are still continuing. Quite apart form their importance as possible earthquake precoursors, Gold notes that such episodes in other parts of the world have in the past been effective indicators of natural gas deposits - although never used in that way. In New Zealand, for example, the site of such events was found, 20 years latere, to be a usable off-shore gas-field. Therefore Gold would urge Adams that methane sniffing should be done now, while this is going on, in the hope of locating the position (also by acoustic triangulation) so that such information can later be used to guide further exploration and possibly drilling. Once the phenomenon stops this poortunity may be lost.
