TitleLetter from Thomas Gold to Sir John Kendrew, Director-General, European Molecular Biology Reserch Center (EMBO), 6900 Heidelberg 1, West Germany
Date2 January 1979
DescriptionRegrets he could not come over after his talk - there was not enough time because of transportation problems to Frankfurt.

Gold was glad to see Kendrew installed in the magnificent setting, and asks how life is in Heidelberg.

Gold expects to spend some time in Europe the next year, mainly in Copenhagen at Nordita. He expects to have a chance to visit Heidelberg again then, in a mor eleisurely manner.

Gold is at present solving the energy crisis by noting that primeval methane exists in large amounts in the upper mantle of the Earth, and that with a little cunning, it could be extracted. He is enclosing some reports about this in case it interests Kemndrew. Gold wonders if he has any views on the possibility which he now favours,. that methane has been converted to petroleum partly by microbial action in the ground, and this has impressed the biogenic stamp on the petroleum. The reasons for this veiwpoint are too lengthy to give here, but seem very compelling, Asks if there is anything in Kendrew's armory for tackling this problem. It would obviously be very important to know.
