TitleLetter from Thomas Gold to Dr Homer Newell, Associate Administrator, Code AA, NASA Headquarters, Washington DC
Date8 November 1971
DescriptionEncloses a copy of a USSR press report discussing precisely the line of evolution for planetary exploration which they favoured on the LPMB and which is still foremost in the minds of many scientists concerned with the space program. It seems clear this will be the chief way in which the moon, Mars, and with it the early history of the solar system will be deciphered. Apollo will do a lot, but Gold fears that it will stop too soon for definitive answers to the main questions. Will continue to do what he can to persuade the public and Congress that such programs are worthwhile and will have a major impact in the long run. Is worried they are leaving this field to the Soviet Union. Some enthusiastic satements are required, and some enthusiasm from within NASA would count for a great deal.
