DescriptionDurade's essay is a chemical study of fire, focusing on analysis of and experimentation with flames. He seeks to determine in particular whether flames are a substance in and of themselves or if they are an aggregate phenomenon of particles instigated by shock or friction. A graphite inscription at top of first page reads 'Candidate for Ct Rumfords [Benjamin Thompson] medal'. Corrections and small deletions appear in ink throughout.
