DescriptionIvens describes a volcanic eruption that took place underwater near São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal in February 1811. He describes the villages of Ginetes, Varzes [Varzea], and Candelaria [Candelária] experiencing earthquakes in the lead up to the eruption. He recounts watching the eruption from land, with flames visible at night, and shoals of dead fish washing ashore, presumably killed by sulphur.
