| Description | Ritchie describes his experiments inspired by [Henri] Dutrochet's principles of endosmose and exosmose, relating to the passing of water and alcohol through an animal membrane, in this case a bladder. Ritchie named the apparatus he created for use in his experiments an 'endosmometer' and makes various hygrometric experiments using it.
John George Children's initials appear next to the date received. Next to this, in graphite, is an inscripton reading '(Fourth)'.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 3 of Abstracts of the Papers Printed in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London [later Proceedings of the Royal Society] as 'An experimental investigation of the phenomena of Endosmose and Exosmose'. |
