Title | Unpublished paper, 'On a general law of density in saturated vapours' by J J [John James] Waterston |
Creator | Waterston; John James (1811-1883); Scottish physicist |
Date | 17 April 1851 |
Description | Waterston explains that the relation between the pressure and temperature of vapours in contact with their generating liquids has been expressed by a variety of empirical formulae, which, although convenient for practical purposes, do not claim to represent any general law. He states that while examining a mathematical theory of gases, he endeavoured to find out, from the experiments of the French Academy, whether the density of steam in contact with water followed any distinct law with reference to the temperature measured from the zero of gaseous tension.
Followed by 18 pages of figures and charts showing experimental apparatus and the density of vapours.
Subject: Physics / Chemistry
Received 19 June 1851. Communicated by Lt Col [Edward] Sabine.
Written by Waterston in Bombay [Mumbai, India].
Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 6 of Abstracts of the Papers Printed in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London [later Proceedings of the Royal Society] as 'On a general law of density in saturated vapours'. |
