Title | Unpublished manuscript, 'On the stability of domes, part II' by E [Edward] Wyndham Tarn |
Creator | Tarn; Edward Wyndham (1827-1900); British architect |
Date | 1866 |
Description | In an earlier paper presented by Tarm to the Royal Society, he obtained formulae for calculating the thrust of a spherical dome of uniform thickness, by supposing it to consist of a number of thin ribs, each of which is formed by two vertical planes intersecting at the axis of the dome, and making a small angle with each other; and then treating each rib as forming, with the corresponding one of the opposite side, a complete arch. In the present paper Tarn applies the same method to domes of other forms than the spherical.
Marked on front as 'Archives 1867'. Includes five structural diagrams in the text. Preceded by a printed booklet of an abstract published by Tarn in the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'On the stability of domes'.
Subject: Civil engineering / Geometry
Received 23 October 1866. Read 22 November 1866. Communicated by [George] Godwin.
Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 15 of Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'On the stability of domes.—Part II'. |
