Description	Stone explains that the errors in the 'Lunar Theory' have been traced to the effects of changes in the unit of time, which have, apparently unconsciously, been introduced from time to time into astronomy, with changes in the adopted data. Annotations in ink throughout. Marked on front as 'Archives Oct 26/83'. With appendix containing a geometrical diagram. Subject: Mathematics /Astronomy Received 3 April 1883. Read 12 April 1883. Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 35 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'The principal cause of the large errors at present existing between the positions of the moon deduced from Hansen’s tables and observation : and the cause of an apparent increase in the secular acceleration in the moon’s mean motion required by Hansen’s tables, or of an apparent change in the time of the earth's rotation'. A version of this paper was published by Stone in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society: Stone, Edward James. 'An Explanation of the Principal Cause of the large Errors at present existing between the Positions of the Moon deduced from Hansen's Tables and from Observation; and the Cause of an Apparent Increase in the Secular Acceleration in the Moon's Mean Motion required by the Tables, or of an Apparent Change in Time of the Earth's Rotation.'
