TitleUnpublished copy of letter and drawings, 'Account of a volcanic eruption at sea, near St Michael's February 1st 1811' from Edwd [Edward] Allen to Mr Vaughan
Date12 March 1811
DescriptionLetter from Allen describing a volcanic eruption that took place at sea near St Michael's [São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal] on 1 February 1811. Allen observed smoke rising from the ocean, followed by fire and black rocks. He also describes a flood that took place around the same time in the village of Furnas [São Miguel, Azores, Portugal], which moved the earth to reveal an old manufactory building that was at least two hundred years old at the time. He then provides a description of Furnas and the nearby hot springs. The letter includes an illustration of the volcanic eruption and is followed by a sketch of a machine found buried underground in Furnas.
