TitleUnpublished paper, 'Isotopic thermal diffusion in gases' by R V Hesketh
CreatorHesketh; R V (fl 1979)
Date1979
DescriptionHesketh writes: 'During the brief time of a binary collision, two monatomic molecules resemble an unstable diatomic molecule. A diatomic molecule has rotational energy states and an unstable diatomic molecule may have virtual rotation states. The simplest real gas mixture is that of two isotopes of one noble gas. In such a mixture, thermal diffusion is a quantum phenomenon, it arises from rotation and may be described in terms of a virtual mass difference shared between two dissimilar colliding molecules.'
