Description | Papers mainly relating to the formation of the Scientific Research Association including correspondence, consitutional, promotional and financial material. Much of the surviving material concerns the problem of rivals to the Association such as the National Union of Scientific Workers and insufficient support from the Scientific Community. This theme appears in the correspondence and especially in file AT/4 Audit of support for the Scientific Research Association. According to circular AT/2/3/9 'favourable replies to the circular widely distributed to scientific men during the winter and spring of 1918-19 number 220, or not much more than 10 per cent. of the number of circulars issued'. Consequently it was felt 'impossible to proceed with the organisation of the Association unless a great deal more active support is forthcoming...' To try to gauge 'the real opinion of representative scientific men' a meeting was to take place 'during the forthcoming meeting of the British Association' for the Advancement of Science. File AT/2/7 shows one scheme to alter the constitution of the British Association to enable it to fulfil the aims of the Scientific Research Association. |
