TitleLetter from Clements R Markham, 21 Eccleston Square, to Sir William Huggins
Date28 April 1903
DescriptionClements R Markham has had a cable from Captain Colbeck in reply to the one informing him that when the 'Morning' approached, the 'Discovery' winter quarters could not reach closer than eight miles, owing to the ice. All provisions had to be shipped over. The difficulties were increased by the movement of the ice requiring constant shifting of the 'Morning' boat'. This makes it quite certain that Scott could not possibly have brought the 'Discovery' back this year.

If the Morning does not go out with relief next December there will be a dreadful catastrophe. There should be no further delay in applying to the government for funding. Markham has investigated the matter of the supply. Extracts about Captain Scott's work are enclosed.
