TitleLetter from Ernest Rutherford, to James Hopwood Jeans, Secretary of the Royal Society
Date12 June 1923
DescriptionReplies to Jeans' request to report on two candidates for the Moseley Research Studentship, Miss [A. C.] Davies and [Patrick Maynard Stuart] Blackett. Describes the work of both as important and lists their merits. Informs Jeans that 'on the one hand, Miss Davies is probably the best, or one of the best, women researchers in this Country in Physics, and deserves encouragement. On the other hand, Blackett has worked independently from the start and has shown unusual promise and originality'. Cannot distinguish between their claims, as both are good candidates, have papers published, and both have financial and teaching considerations involved in the problem. Concludes that 'if either of these candidates is selected no mistake would be made'.
