Title | Letter from Karl Pearson, 7 Well Road, Hampstead, to Joseph Larmor, Secretary of the Royal Society |
Date | 9 February 1902 |
Description | Informs Lamar that the nuisance of the matter is that he [Pearson] does not know how to reply to [William] Bateson briefly, when Bateson took up 12 pages of the Proceedings with an attack on the methods of most of Pearson's work for the last eight years. Expresses the difficulty of the fact that Bateson does not define the terms he uses, or use them in the accepted manner. Has read through Bateson's own 'huge' volume of work but this gives conflicting definitions. Informs Larmor that as soon as the Royal Society started sending Pearson's papers to the Zoological Committee, there was certain to be a row. Thinks that Bateson's contraversial paper and his [Pearson's] reply are not suitable matter for the Royal Society's publications, but will take steps to publishing the reply elsewhere. |
