Description | Notes the resolution passed at the International Geodetic Association's meeting in Paris on 26 September 1900: that they are interested in the project to measure the arc of latitude in Africa, along the 30th meridian. Notes that at a meeting of the International Association of Academies in Paris on 17 April 1901, a report on the African Geodetic Arc was presented by the Royal Society. Notes that at the Congress of the International Geodetic Association in Copenhagen on 13 August 1903, a resolution was passed to thank David Gill and the British Government for their work that they had done and proposed to do in South Africa. Notes the high importance of the proposed work, and suggests further work to be done in the Southern Hemisphere. Also details plans to measure an arc of meridian in Egypt as soon as possible. Recommends that the matter be brought to the notice of the Marquess of Lansdowne, with a view to showing the Earl of Cromer [Evelyn Baring] how desirable it is to carry out work in Egypt.
Includes pencil notes at bottom noting the Council's resolutions, and further steps. |
