TitleLetter from Edmond Fitzmaurice, 1st Baron Fitzmaurice, Foreign Office, to the Secretary, the Royal Society
Date22 October 1907
DescriptionTransmitting a copy of the bluebook contaiing a report on the proceedings of the International Conference on Sleeping Sickness, organised by the Foreign Office. The conference recommended the establishment of a Central Bureau in London and H.M. Government have decided to approach the Royal Society to obtain permission to establish it in their building, giving reasons. It is suggested that the Bureau should have a Committee of Management and a paid Director and Assistant. A lay Chairman is proposed, Sir West Ridgeway, who has had experience in tropical adminstration. Suggestions for the scientific members of the Committee include Dr. Rose Bradford, Sir Patrick Manson and Professor Boyce. The Royal Society should nominate a Secretary from its junior staff. The Scientific Director would be selected by the Committee of Management. An early reply would be desirable, since the British delegates will meet soon, to make a submission to the second International Conference.
