TitleCopy letter from Charles Prestwood Lucas, Downing Street, to the Secretary to the Treasury
Date3 April 1908
DescriptionOn the epidemic of sleeping sickness in Uganda, the Congo Free State and in French Congo, and its spread to other areas of Africa. Some progress has been made in investigating the disease and in restricting it. He notes the arrangement of an International Conference by the Foreign Office and a second event, at which the opposition of French and Italian representatives made it impossible to reach a general agreement on the matter of an International Bureau. It would be beneficial for medical officers in the colonies to have co-ordinated information on sleeping sickness together with other resources for general officials and missionaries. The Royal Society would be willing to host a National Bureau and he outlines costs for such a resource. The Sudan Government would be willing to contribute £300. He hopes the Treasury would support the plan.
