TitleLetter from Douglas Mawson, Royal Societies Club, St. James's Street, to Sir Arthur Schuster
Date23 June 1916
DescriptionThanking Schuster for his reply of the 20th, and noting that the £500 he mentioned is safe. What remains could be met by £250 but he cannot make an exact estimate until Dr. Chree should have the curves and data in his hands. In view of the statement from Dr. Farr and Webb, it may be possible for Chree to give a close estimate of the expense still to be incurred. This could be spread over two years with perhaps a note of £200 next year, to be increased if necessary the following year. It is important that Chree should do the work as he is the one of the British community who has experience of Antarctic magnetograph curves. He has lunched with Shaw, who said that he was quite willing that Chree should work on the curves once finished with Scott's, so the matter is in a very satisfactory state, thanks to Schuster and Shaw. As the matter is not immediate he proposes to leave it until after the Council meeting of 6 July.
