TitleLetter from Charles Chree, 75 Church Street, Richmond, Surrey, to Arthur Schuster
Date10 July 1916
DescriptionHe has had a letter from Mawson enclosing two recent letters from Schuster, and a memorandum from Webb, the magnetic observer, who is now at the front in France. This he supplemented from previous letters. Mawson asked Chree to draw up a programme for Schuster, which he has done, with information on total estimated costs and expenditure up to the end of the year. Chree complied with the first request but not the second, as he considers this to be Mawson's job. He outlines some relevant points. Finishing the Scott work will be all he can do in the present year, leaving aside the printing and proof work. He can supply a programme of preliminary work, giving examples, which could be followed by the person currently working in New Zealand. Work could go on in New Zealand and Britain if Dr. Farr is willing to keep an eye on matters. To risk sending the curves or tabulations by sea is not desirable, owing to the submarine threat and therefore the work would be best continued in New Zealand. For the future, Chree's services should be on the same conditions as they have been for the Scott Expedition, with the Meteorological Office being compensated for his time. A qualified assistant would be necessary for arithmetical and other work. For a year's time, it would mean £300. He does not think he should apply for a grant himself.
