TitleLetter from Douglas Mawson, Royal Societies Club, St. James's Street, to Arthur Schuster
Date12 July 1916
DescriptionHe has been taken up with munitions work and has had little time to give to magnetics. He wrote to Chree for an estimate of costs. He cannot state a figure but thinks that he and an assistant would be £300 for one year on the arrangement of Napier Shaw. He would not be able to start before the New Year as he has not completed Scott's magnetics, but that some of the work might be done in New Zealand. He would send out instructions and the work could be done at small cost. By the time Chree could start, much of the work would be done, the war might be over, and Scott's magnetics 'wiped off'. Chree emphasises the dangers of posting the curves from New Zealand as they might be lost in transit. If £50 were voted now to re-engage the two scalers at Christchurch, with £300 next year, it would nearly complete the work. He would like to know if this could be done.
