TitleLetter from Charles Chree, Meteorological Office, Central Observatory, Kew Observatory, Richmond, Surrey, to Joseph Larmor
Date8 May 1911
DescriptionHe has had an unexpected call from Professor Farr, just returned from Germany, where Farr had seen Schmidt and Wiechert. He had been acting as advisor to Dr. Mawson on a contemplated Antarctic Expedition. Farr had gained the support of the two Germans and had secured the cooperation of an existing German expedition which had already set out on 8 May. He asks if the Royal Society wishes to have any cogniscence of the scheme and might do anything to back it. Eschenhagen magnetographs have already been ordered, but it remains to be seen if they can recruit a suitable observer. It is urgent that the proposed expedition catches up with the German party at Buenos Aires. He does not know what communication Mawson may have had with the Royal Society. He would like to know what to say to Farr, as an old acquaintance. Mawson's expedition is regarded as an Australasian scheme and therefore a benevolent attitude would be desirable. He will let Shaw know too. Mawson said he was going to Manchester, care of Professor Rutherford.

With a draft reply from Larmor.
