TitleIncomplete letter from [Edward Charles Stirling], The University, Adelaide, South Australia, to [William Henry] Bragg
Date3 July 1912
DescriptionHe has Bragg's letter regarding the Royal Society and Mawson's expedition. It seemed best to get a statement from Professor Henderson, 'who is a sort of local agent for Mawson'. He encloses this and sympathises with the Royal Society view that the main support should come from Australia, but since Mawson is engaged in scientific work, he thinks that a grant would indicate a blessing, even if a small amount. That would ensure some prestige is attached to the expedition. Mawson is a capable man, and barring accidents, the expedition should be able to give a good account of itself. Most did not expect he would be able to excite enough enthusiam for the mission, but he did so, all but the £9,000 which is still needed.

They are getting ready for Osborne. His laboratory would have been ready but for some strikes, and it should suit his purposes. Stirling sent him a copy of the plans, so he could think abut how to fit it up. From all that has been said of him, he should be a 'persona grata' among them.
