2. Report on the Third Session of the European Council for Nuclear Research

The Committee had before it the Report by Professor P M S Blackett and Mr D W Fry on the Third Session of the European Council for Nuclear Reserach held in Amsterdam in October 1952. Sir David Brunt, who was present as an observer on behalf of the Council of the Royal Society, informed the Committee that the Report would be considered by the Council of the Royal Society at its meeting on 6 November and that the Council would wish to have before it the views of British nuclear physicists. After considerble discussion it was Resolved -
(i) that it was the unanimous view of all present that it was necessary for the progress of British nuclear physics that British nuclear physicists shoudl have access to a proton synchroton of the size and character projected by the European Council for Nuclear Research;
(ii) that it was the unanimous view of all present that (i) could best be achieved by the United Kingdom co-operating in the European scheme and signing the agreement with the European Council for Nuclear Research: and
(iii) that it is a recommendation to Council that the Royal Society propose to the Treasury that, in view of the contributions in kind to be made by this country to the European scheme, an annual commitment of £250,000 for eight years be undertaken as the British contribution to the European Council. '
