Description ' At the fifth meeting of the British Committee for Co-operation with UNESCO in the Natural Sciences, held in the rooms of the Royal Society on Tuesday, 24 May 1949 at 2.30 pm.

Mr H L Verry attended in place of Sir Ben Lockspier, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Mr F R Cowell, Ministry of Educatin, and Mr A H Waterfield also attended.

Matters discussed;

38. Minutes of fourth meeting, held on 19 October 1948, were confirmed subject to the addition of the name of Dr O J R Howarth among those present.

it was agreed that the next meeting of the Committee should take place at the Royal Society at 2.30 pm on Friday, 9 September 1949.

Summary of recommendations to Council;
1. That working parties on (a) Food and People and (b) Arid Zone, be set up as recommended in Minute 45.

2. That a Sub-committee consisting of Professor J D Bernal, Dr E Bolton King, Dr J Needham, And Professor F J M Stratton, with Professor Adrian in a consultative capacity, be formed to collect information and report back to the Committee on the special topic for general debate at the 4th Session of the General Conference of UNESCO to be held in Paris in September 1949. The special topic being the duties of the state in regard to education, science and culture as referred to in the letter dated 21 May 1949 from the Minister of Education and paper Nat. Com 49/9. '
