TitleMinutes of a meeting of the Sub-Committee of the Joint Permanent Eclipse Committee
Date14 February 1919
Description ' The Sub-Committee met in the Rooms of the Royal Astronomical Society at 12 o'clock noon

Present: Sir F Dyson in the chair; Mr Cottingham; Dr Crommelin; Mr Davidson; Professor Eddington; Professor Fowler, Secretary

The Minutes of the preceding meeting of the Sub-Committee were read and confirmed.

Arising out of the minutes: the Chairman reported that the instruments to be taken out by the two expeditions had been insured for £3000, the Astrographic object glasses having been valued at £1000 each after correspondence with Sir Howard Grubb.

The Chairman further stated that arrangements had been made for forwarding the instruments to Liverpool on February 20th, to be put on board the Booth Line Steamer 'Anselm', which was due to sail for Para on March 6th. Return passages to Para by this steamer had been secured for the Brazilian party, and outward passages to Madeira for the Principe party. Owing to difficulties caused by the political situation in Portugal. it was not possible for the observers to travel via Lisbon, and no information was obtainable as regards steamers to Principe. Under these circumstances he had thought it desirable to approach the Admiralty with a view to obtaining the services of a warship to convey the Principe party from Madeira to their destination.

After consideration of the details of actual and probable expenditure, it was proposed by Professor Fowler, and carried, that the chairman be requested to make application to the Government Grant Committee for a further sum of £250.

A letter from Father Cortie was read expressing regret at his inability to attend the meetind, and stating that the Portuguese Provincial, Father Pinto, had requested the Superiors in Brazil to welcome the members of the Brazilian expedition. '
