Matters discussed; 1. Chair Professor R O Redman took the Chair in Sir Richard Woolley's absence
2. Minutes The minutes of the previous meeting on 14 February 1964 were confirmed
3. Applications An application was made by Dr G Henderson, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, for support towards an eclipse and coronagraph project - a two scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer for simultaneous observatons of pairs of coronal emission lines. The application had been partially to the S.R.C. (mainly for equipment) and partially to the J.P.E.C. (mainly for travel and subsistence). The Recommendations of the J.P.E.C at this meeting were; (i) To give support to the eclipse part of Dr Henderson's project. (ii) To provide travel, freight, and living expenses to the value of £2550 as set out in Dr Henderson's letter of 3 May (attached herewith) for the 1970 eclipse. (iii) To help the expedition by lending a 12 - inch or 16 - inch coelostat, and possibly an 8 - inch concave mirror, a small flat, and a petrol electric generator. (iv) To provide £300 for minor apparatus and contingencies. It is understood that these recommendation are to be subject to provision being made (by the S.R.C. or from elsewhere) for the main parts of the equipment and its assembly.
4. Future of Committee The Committe discussed its future and no change in the J.P.E.C structure or administration was recommended.
5. Application by Dr R C Maddison The Secretary drew attention to an application by Dr R C Maddison, University of Keele, to the Royal Astronomical Society for £360 to enable three fellows to observe the 1968 eclipse in Siberia. No recommendation was made that this expedition be supported by the J.P.E.C. ' |
