1. The Committee met to consider a letter from the Foreign Office, of 18 July 1902, asking the opinion of the Royal Society upon a note from the German Ambassador inviting H.M. Government to join in the institution of an international enquiry into earthquakes, and to send experts to the Congress which is to be held early next year.
2. Considered letter form the German Ambassador to the Foreign Office, together with a Compte Rendu of the Strasburg Conference therin referred to.
3. Professor Milne gave an account of the origin of the Strasburg Conference, and stated that the work of the proposed organisation was being carried on by the Seismological Committe of the British Association, and read a letter which had been addressed to H. M. Government in 1897 by that Committee resulting in the co-operation which now exists.
4. Resolution proposed by Sir William Abney, Seconded By Professor Darwin, 'That International Cooperation in the study of Seismology is desirable.'
5. Resolution proposed by Sir Michael Foster, seconded by Mr Teall, 'that before proceeding to consider the best mode of practically carrying out such Cooperation, the Foreign Office be requested to call the attention of the German Government to the existence of the International Association of Academies. '
6. Resolved ' that in view of the existence of this Association the Committee considers that, before advising H. M. Govenrment upon the question of the participation of Great Britain in the Congress proposed by the German Ambassador, the Council of the International Association should be consulted, with a view to ascertaining whether, in their opinion, International Cooperation in Seismological study is desirable and feasible. '
7. Draft letter to the International Association of Academies was considered and after amendment, approved [Contents not listed]
8. Resolved ' That a summary of the replies received from the Associted Academies be sent round to this Committee and that the Committee meet again in early October. ' |
