1. Confirmed minutes of the meeting on 24 July 1939

2. Apologies for absence from Sir Frank Smith, Dr E C Stonar, and Dr E V Appleton

3. Approved revised estimates for 1939-40

4. Work being carried out for the Air Ministry reported on by Professor Cockcroft. ' It was agreed to inform the Vice-Chancellor of the work being carried out and to send him a copy of the letter from the Air Council expressing their appreciation of the work. It was agreed also to suggest to the DSR Air Ministry that there might be commenced applications of the apparatus and that action might be taken to prevent patents being taken out by outside inteests.

5. Professor Cockcroft informed the Committee of other radio work which had been carried out partly by the staff of the Cavendish Laboratory and partly by the Mond Laboratory staff. Payment for materials had been made through the Mond Laboratory account. The cost of materials and labour plus 25% for overhead expenses will be received from the Air Ministry.

6. It was reported that G W Fynn had been granted leave of absence whilst on National Service at the Air Defence Experimental Establishment, Christchurch.'

7. Report on work progress in the Laboratory received.

8. Read letter from Dr D R Pye (Director of Scientific Research at the Air Ministry) to Dr J F Allen ' offering him an appointment for six months as from 1 January 1940, at a salary of £25 a month whilst supervising the Air Ministry's work in the Mond Laboratory. It was greed to recommend to the Council of the Royal Society that Dr Allen's stipend shoudl be made up by the Society to £400 a year during his employment by the Air Ministry for so long a period as he would normally be in receipt of payment by the Royal Society as a Mond Laboratory research assistant. Agreed to write to Dr Pye asking that Income Tax should not be deducted at source.

9. The Committee considered that it was most desirable that the Royal Society should continue to assist the Laboratory by providing for the stipend of one or more members of the staff, but that in view of the war they would prefer to postpone a final recommendation of the pollicy to be adopted for one year. It wa agred to ask the Council of the Royal Society to continue the present arrangement for a further year. '
