1. Statement by Chairman ' explaining the circumstances which led up to the formation of the Committee. He referred to the proposed programme, put forward by Professor H B Bigelow, for combined research between the Bermuda Biological Station and the Woods Hole Oceanogrphic Institution on Gulf Stream problems, and expressed the hope that the Development commission, on receipt of a detailed scheme, would recommend the payment of a grant from Government funds to enable the Bermuda Station to carry out its share of the work.
2. The Committee unanimously approved the programme which Professor Bigelow had submitted.
3. A discussion followed on the personnel and equipment needed for oceanographical work based on Bermuda. In this the Committee received great assistance from Professor Conklin, who had already given the matter his careful consideration. It was finally agreed that the following figures might be set down as a basis for further consideration at the next meeting. [Figures provided for Capital Expenditure, Recurring Expenditure, and notes on the estimates.]
4. Sir Percy Douglas recommended that the ship should be purchased and equipped in this country, and, on the informtion at present available, the Committee was prepared to accept this view.
5. The Committee recommend that the work should continue for a period of five years in the first instance. They think it most improbable that the effect of fluctuations in the Gulf Stream on conditions in the N E Atlantic can be ascertained in this time; but they consider that after five years work it will be possible to determine whether the methods employed are likely to give the desired information. '
6. Next meeting fixed for 7 September at 2.45 pm
