1. Memorandum to form the basis of discussion for the meeting submitted by the Chairman 2. In his capacity as Chairman of the Post-War Fundamental Research in Physics Committee Sir Thomas Merton explained the line of action which had been taken so far by that committee. 3. Agreed matter of increased laboratory accommodation a subject for consideration by the U.G.C and not by this committee 4. After discussion agreed that heads of departments who ae Fellows of the Royal Society should be asked five questions; 4a How they would anticipate research would develop in their departments after the war 4b Do they consider that an increased number of technical assistants will be required in their departments 4c Do they consider it desirable that heads of departments and senior lecturers should have experienced reserch assistants? If so, what number would they suggest for their departments? 4d Do they consider that the D.S.I.R. should continue to be responsible for maintenance grants to research students? What do they regard as a suitable scale for such grants? Do they consider that, subject to the recommendation of the head of the department, all students obtaining a first-class honours degree should be given grants to enable them to undertake research? 4e What are their requirements for equipment for special reserch work?
5. Agreed Professor E K Rideal and Professor A R Todd should be supplied with copies of the questionnaire sent out by the Post-War Fundamental Research in Physics Committee, and should advise how it could be adapted to meet the needs of this committee, having regard to the specific questions enumeratied in 3. 6. Agreed items 6 and 7 in the Chairman's memorandum should be discussed at the mext meeting, and that there should be no further discussion of item 8. |
