' With reference to minute 3 of 21 July 1950 the Yarrow Research Fund Committee, consulted by correspondence in October 1951, agreed to recommend to Council that the stipend of Dr S A Barker, Mackinnon Research Student, be increased from £500 to £550 per annum, plus superannuation as from 1 October 1951.

The Yarrow Research Fund Committee was informed by correspondence in July 1952 of Dr S A Barker's appointment to a Research Fellowship of the British Rayon Research Institute and his consequent resignation from the Mackinnon Research Studentship from 30 September 1952. The Committe agreed to recommend to Council that the appointment of a Mackinnon Research Student be advertised at a stipend of £550 per annum (inclusive of £50 superannuation allowance), the appointment to date from 1 january 1953 and to be for two years in the first instance, for original research in the physical sciences including chemistry, astronomy and engineering sciences. '
