Secretary reported he had ' in reply to a private communication from Sir R Welby, written a private letter which had been submitted to members of the Committee before despatch '

Letter read from the Treasury of 19 January 1889 concerning the completion of the Challenger Report. [transcript in minutes]

Secretary 'reported that he had informed Mr Murray of teh intended meeting of the Committee, and that Mr Churnley had, by direction of Mr Murray, sent copies of letters as follows;
1. Letter from John Murray of the Challenger Expedition Office, of 5 November 1888 confirming he cannot undertake to complet ehte Challenger Report as he thinks it shouldbe completed by next March; it would need £800 or £900 pounds mor and another year, to cover his salary and that of a clerk. Discusses future if Government does want to be rid of him by March next. [Transcript of leeter in minutes]
2. Letter from John Murray at the Challewnger Expedition Office on 23 January 1889 with observations on the grants and work done

Secretary directed to write to the Treasury in a letter dated 7 March 1889 [Transcript in minutes] regarding the best course to pursue
