Citation ' May it Please your Majesty

The President Council and Fellows , of your Majesties Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge, Your most dutifull Subjects, Presume to Approach your Sacred Person, with the deepest Sence of Gratitude for the many inestimable Blessings they Enjoy under the influence of your Majesties Wise and Gentle Government

The Numerous instances of your Royal favour extended to other Societies founded for the Advancement of Learning, have also encouraged them to beg of your Majesty that they may have the Honour of Seeing your August Names inscribed in their Book of Charters and Laws, as their most Gracious Patron,

This great Honour added to the like they have Received from Some of your Royal Predecessors, will encrease the Reputation of the Society, and as it Shews them they have the happiness of being more immediately under your Royal Protection will yet more Strongly incite them to the pursuit of the Great end of their Institution, the Advancement of all Sorts of usefull Knowledge, and that particularly by Such Observations and Experiments, as may tend to the improvement of the Natural Produce, the Manufactures and Navigation of your Majesties Kingdoms; by which the Riches of the Nation may be encreased, and many benefits they hope be Derived to the latest Posterity. '
