Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Letter from John Barrow, Admiralty, 15 April 1839, to the Marquis of Northampton, full text entered into the minutes: communicating an accompanying letter from the Marquis of Normanby and Sir J. M. Colebrooke, relating to deficiencies of instruments for making meteorological observations. Letter from James Stephen, Colonial Office, to Sir John Barrow, full text entered into the minutes: enclosing a letter from William Colebrooke. Letter from William Colebrook, Antigua, 15 February 1839, to Lord Glenelg, full text entered into the minutes: he has received the despatch with copies of Colonel Reid's Law of Storms, noting that observations would be facilitated by approved instruments, listing what might be required; and stating that officers of the Engineers, Artillery, or Medical Officers at foreign stations would be valuable observers; Port Officers should be required to collect observations from ships' log-books. All letters referred to the Meteorological Committee, the Chairman requested to summon a meeting of that committee. Mr. Few attended to read an agreement on the subject of arbitration between the Royal Society and Mr. Panizzi, the Society's seal added, with signatures of President and Council. Letter from Mr. Spring Rice on the supply of instruments for propsed magnetic observatories in connection with the South Polar Expedition. Lieutenant H. A. Ormsby requested an extension of time for admission into the Fellowship, until his return from India, granted. |
