Commencing with a list of Council members present: Dr. John Bostock; Sir William Burnett; Samuel Hunter Christie; Charles Daubeny; Bryan Donkin; Thomas Galloway; William Robert Grove; Leonard Horner; George Rennie; Peter Mark Roget; Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Sabine; Captain William Henry Smyth; Charles Wheatstone; the President, Spencer Joshua Alwyn Compton, 2nd Marquess of Northampton, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Mr. Donkin made and subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. Letter from Henry Thomas De la Beche, Geological Survey of the United Kingdom, 6 February 1846, to the Marquess of Northampton, full text entered into the minutes: forwarding sheets of the Geological Survey maps of Great Britain, noting that all future United Kingdom maps will be sent to the Society; with a memorandum from Robert Hunt stating that the index sheet of colours would be forwarded in a few days. Resolved that the resident return thanks to De la Beche. Edward Sabine reported favourably on his examination of the magnetical and meteorological observations made in the South Polar seas; the President to express satisfaction to the Admiralty on the conduct of the expedition and that of Lieutenant Moore. Mr. Horner reported for the committee examining publication of Philosophical Transactions: on the number of copies of papers allowed to authors and their method of printing and distribution, recommendations adopted. Last Council's resolution on copies of papers to authors rescinded; 50 copies of papers to be allowed to each author, with an additional 50 copies if the authors apply before going to press and stock to be sold off after 5 years. Mr. Wharton Jones applied to have the plates for his paper on blood corpuscles printed in colour, the matter referred to the Committee of Physiology. Mr. Grove applied to borrow the meteorite specimen from Buenos Aires owned by the Society, granted. Candidates for Foreign Membership to be recommended to the Society: M. Argelander, Professor Kupffer and Professor Auguste De la Rive. The President announced the presentation of 10 volumes of a Natural History of New York, presented by the Trustees of the State Library via Lord Aberdeen and Anthony Barclay; thanks to be returned.
