DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Dr. John Bostock; Sir William Burnett; Thomas Galloway; William Robert Grove; Leonard Horner; Peter Mark Roget; Dr. John Forbes Royle; Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Sabine; Dr. William Sharpey; Captain William Henry Smyth; Charles Wheatstone; the President, Spencer Joshua Alwyn Compton, 2nd Marquess of Northampton, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Letter from the Treasurer of the Parochial Schools of St. Mary-le-Strand requesting financial aid; the Secretary to reply that the Society had no funds for such requests. Resolved that an instruction be sent to the Charter Committee, requesting that they report on how far the Charters and Statutes are adapted to the present Royal Society and what alterations might be made. Resolved that Mr. Grove be appointed to the Charter Committee. Resolved that in the event of a new Charter, clauses to be added limiting the number of Fellows for annual election and altering the mode of election. Lieutenant-Colonel Sabine reported on receiving a letter from Professor De la Rive on his election as a Foreign Member. Resolved that illustrations for Mr. Wharton Jones's paper should not be tinted. The salary of the Assistant Secretary to be raised to £300 per annum.
