DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Thomas Brande; John George Children; William Clift; Reverend James Cumming; Michael Faraday; Davies Gilbert; George Bellas Greenough; Reverend Dr. Philip Jennings; William Hasledine Pepys; Reverend Baden Powell; Peter Mark Roget; Captain William Henry Smyth; the Treasurer, John William Lubbock, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Reverend Baden Powell was sworn in as a member of Council. Mr. Baily requested to superintend the graduation of the barometer scale being made for the Society by Mr. Newman. Davies Gilbert requested the loan of one of the Society's clocks to apply to it a new pendulum and apparatus for measuring temperature, granted. Report of the Finance Committe read, recommending the increase in composition in lieu of annual payments by Fellows be raised from £40 to £60 and that the Donation Fund should be applied to relieve the Society's funds, including the construction of Newman's barometer, in this year. Letter from Professor De Candolle in thanks for the award of the Royal Medal. Captain Smyth applied for a grant of Pond's last catalogue of stars from the Greenwich Observations for a foreign gentleman, agreed.
