Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. New members of Council were sworn in. Report from the Commitee to consider whether a successor to James Hudson should be appointed: the title Clerk to replace Assistant Secretary, duties to remain those specified in Statutes except for entering books into the catalogue and the sale of Philosophical Transactions. A Librarian to be employed to catalogue books. The sale of Philosophical Transactions to be effected by a bookseller. The charwoman employed to clean the apartments to be retained and not resident in the house. List of applicants for the positions of Assistant Secretary, Clerk and Librarian referred to the Committee for consideration. The estimates for a gallery around the Library referrred to the Library Committee for a report to Council. Charles Lyell's paper 'On the proofs of a gradual rise in land in certain parts of Sweden' to be considered as the Bakerian Lecture. The Rumford Medal to be awarded to M. Melloni for discoveries relating to radiant heat. Michael Faraday gave notice of his intention to propose a resolution on the award of Royal Medals in cases where a paper is eligible in more than one category of science. |
