DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie; John George Children; Michael Faraday; Dr. Henry Holland; Reverend Dr. Philip Jennings; Charles Konig; Herbert Mayo; Roderick Impey Murchison; Sir John Rennie; Peter Mark Roget; the Vice President, William Thomas Brande, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Francis Baily recommended as Treasurer. Letter from Charles Stokes, declining to be a Member of Council for the succeeding year, Samuel Hunter Christie to be proposed in his place. John William Lubbock to be proposed as a Member of Council, and if he should decline, William Hasledine Pepys to be recommended. Report of the Medal Committee for Mathematics recommending the award of a Royal Medal to William Rowan Hamilton, for papers including the discovery of conical refraction: the Committee recommend that the award of the 1838 Royal Medal should be for the most important unpublished paper submitted prior to June of that year. Letter from the Astronomer Royal, claiming a clock from the Royal Society, Mr. Children to enquire of Captain Beaufort on the claim. Report of the Librarian on non-retruned books. List of bills to be paid.
