DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Allen; Francis Bailey; Reverend Dr. William Buckland; John George Children; Samuel Hunter Christie; Davies Gilbert; Joseph Henry Green; Charles Konig; John William Lubbock; Roderick Impey Murchison; Peter Mark Roget; Captain William Henry Smyth; Reverend William Whewell; the President, His Royal Highness [Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex] in the chair. A note states that the meeting was held at Kensington Palace.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. William Buckland was sworn in as a member of Council. The Secretary read a paper delivered to him at last Council, headed 'Requisition for a Special General Meeting of the Royal Society', signed by six Fellows, and supported by eight more, full text entered into the minutes: on expunging minutes identified as 'informal and invalid' and on the acknowledgement of A. B. Granville's book gift. Unanimous resolution of Council that no Special Meeting has the power to expunge minutes of the Society's proceedings. Resolution to call a Special Meeting on 23 June to consider the matter of witholding thanks for the gift of Granville's book.
