Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. New members of Council were sworn in. £40 to be paid to Mr. Bailliere on account for books. Letter from George Grey, Downing Street, 4 March 1837, to J. D. Roberton, full text entered into the minutes: instructions have been given to the Governor of Mauritius to purchase the interest of Captain Lloyd, the Colonial Surveyor-General, in his observatory; Capotian Lloyd does not feel at liberty to leave the Society's instruments without permission and Grey asks if the Society would allow the instruments to be retained. List of the Mauritius instruments entered into the minutes, with only an invariable pendulum belonging to the Society, the Secretary to ask for its return. Dr. Bostick to be requested to write revise the sixth and seventh part of the Library Catalogue. Mr. Greenough to revise the part relating to geology, minerals and fossils. Letter from Jared Sparks requesting permission to copy parts of the Journal Books relating to the election and admission of Benjamin Franklin, granted. Letter from Lieutenant Denison, Woolwich, 8 March 1837, to President and Council of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: offering the services of officers of engineers for making observations under the direction of the Royal Society, and in response to Baron Humboldt's letter; with discussion of expenses, instruction on instrumens and related matters, requesting that his enclosures of letters from Colonel Fox be returned when the Society has finished with them. A committee to be re-appointed to consider Baron Humboldt's letter, with Lieutenant Denison in attendance. Letter from Mr. Gould, the late Porter, to be dealt with by the Treasurer. Furniture to be purchased for Mr. Robertson's room, not exceeding £10. Treasurer to request copies of Reports of the House from the Speaker of the House of Commons. |
