DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Cavendish, Earl of Burlington; John George Children; Samuel Hunter Christie; John Frederick Daniell; Davies Gilbert; Reverend George Peacock; William Haseldine Pepys; Stephen Peter Rigaut; Peter Mark Roget; Captain William Henry Smyth; James Walker; the Treasurer, Francis Baily, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. New members of Council made and signed the declaration in lieu of the oath. List of bills for payment, for Copley Medals and Philosophical Transactions. £3 granted to the Reverend J. J. Ellis for reading the Fairchild Lecture. A list of presents received to be printed in Philosophical Transactions. Letter from Richard Taylor requesting permission to examine documents relating to Crane Court, purchased by him; granted, in a manner approved by the solicitor, Mr. Few. A letter by Dr. Marshall Hall in reply to a note in Mr. Newport's paper published in Philosophical Transactions, to be read at the Society's meeting that evening. Letter from George Lowe explaining his non-payment of subscriptions and asking to be re-proposed by Council into the Fellowship, so ordered. Application by T. J. Pettigrew to copy portraits of Malpighi, Ruysch and Huxham in the Society's Meeting Room, granted. Application from Mr. C. Turnor for permission to copy portraits of Lord Brouncker, William Derham and Henry Oldenburg, with a drawing of Newton's telescope, for a collection he is making, granted. Letter from Mr. Dilke asking permission to print abstracts of Royal Society papers in the Athenaeum weekly journal, to be furnished at the discretion of the Secretaries. Letter from Mr. E. J. Yates respecting a universal standard of measurement.
