Commencing with a list of Council members present: Dr. John Bostock; John George Children; Samuel Hunter Christie; John Frederick Daniell; William Haseldine Pepys; Peter Mark Roget; John Forbes Royle; Captain William Henry Smyth; Benjamin Travers; Charles Wheatstone; Reverend William Whewell; the Treasurer, Francis Baily, in the chair.
Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Professor Agassiz and Philip von Martius were selected to be recommended to the Society for Foreign Membership. Committee resolutions: that permanent committees in each department of science should be composed of members of the Society who have devoted their attention to those subjects, in order to respond to questions from Council; each committee should consist of seven members with power to add others up to fifteen in number; committees in six subject branches to be formed, these resolutions to be considered at next Council. Professor Rigaud requested permission to print specimens from the Principia, with letters, including by Papin, Savery and others, granted. The President announced to Council that he had appointed the Reverend John Jospeh Ellis to read the Fairchild Lecture for the present year. Mr. Sterling, in Calcutta, applied to have his name inserted in the printed list of Fellows, granted. |
