Commencing with a list of Council members present: John Rose Bradford (Secretary); Sir William Crookes (Foreign Secretary); Sir George Darwin; James Cossar Ewart; Sir David Gill; John Scott Haldane; Charles Thomas Heycock; Alfred Bray Kempe (Treasurer); Horace Lamb; Joseph Larmor (Secretary); Hector Munro MacDonald; Dr Frederick Walker Mott; Charles Algernon Parsons; William Henry Perkin; Edward Bagnall Poulton; Lieutenant-Colonel David Prain; Sir Arthur W. Rücker; Sir James Stirling; Frederick Thomas Trouton; William Whitaker; the President, Sir Archibald Geikie, in the Chair. The Assistant Secretary [Robert Harrison] attended.

Among matters discussed or noted:

New Members of Council made and subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath.
1. Minutes of the previous meeting (30 November) were read and signed as correct.
2. Appointments of Vice-Presidents for the ensuing year.
3. Letter dispatched from Geikie and Larmor to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, regarding the Royal Society Telescope. Full text entered into minutes.
4. Appointment of committees for the ensuing year: Antarctic Magnetic Observations Committee; Antarctic Meteorological Observations Committee; Catalogue of Scientific Papers Committee; 'Challenger' Reports Committee; Eros Observation Committee; Evolution Committee; Finance Committee; Glass Workers' Cataract Committee; Indian Government Advisory Committee; International Association of Academies Committee; International Catalogue Committee; Joint Permanent Eclipse Committee; Library Committee; Observatories Committee; Scientific Relief Committee; Seismology Committee; Soirée Committee; Solar Research Committee; Tropical Diseases Committee; Sectional Committees, including Mathematics Committee; Physics and Chemistry Committee; Geology Committee; Botany Committee; Zoology Committee; Physiology Committee;
5. New members listed to constitute Government Grant Boards. 6. Appointments to the Governing Body and General Board of the National Physical Laboratory.
7. Letter from the Secretary of the Joint Scholarships Board to appoint a representative from the Royal Society. Prof. John Perry re-appointed.
8. Request from the Registrar of the University of Liverpool for a representative for the Court of the University for three years. Prof. Francis Gotch re-appointed.
9. Request from the Secretary of the Crystal Palace Company for support on a proposed Chemical and Pharmaceutical Exhibition. No action taken.
10. Offer from C.E. Fawsitt of a bust of Berzelius. Accepted with thanks.
11. Request from J.H. Yoxall MP to publish in local press at Redditch a letter from Moses and Caleb Sheward to the Society, dated 1749. Granted.
12. Letter from President and Secretary of a Committee for the erection of a monument to Jules Marey at Beaune, requesting patronage from the Society. Expression of sympathy to be given.
13. Selection of the Croonian Lecturer. Referred to Sectional Committees for Botany, Physiology, and Zoology.
14. Selection of Bakerian Lecturer. Deferred.
15. Balance Sheets of the International Catalogue of Scientific Literature for 1901-1905. Discussion postponed.
16. Report from Glass Workers' Cataract Committee, dated 30 October 1908. Recommendations approved and entered into minutes.
17. Request from Secretary to the Board of Visitors of the Royal Observatory for a FRS to fill vacancy on Board. Arthur Schuster nominated.
18. Request for Lord Rayleigh to act as delegate of the Society for Darwin Centenary Celebrations at Cambridge.
19. Report of Scientific Relief Committee. Recommendations approved and entered into minutes.
20. Receipt of a bronze medal and a record commemorating the Tercentenary of Ulisse Aldrovandi from the Aldrovandi Committee at Bologna.
21. Permissions to editors and others for purposes of re-printing and illustrations.
22. List of bills for payment for paper, engravings, printings, and for accountants' fees.
